Read the CEFR report

When a candidate finishes, FluencyScreen scores the transcript against the CEFR scale and produces a structured report. Here's how to read it.

The estimated level

The headline is the CEFR level — from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery) — with the AI's own confidence estimate, which is not a measured accuracy rate. It's the single number most recruiters care about.

CEFR in one line:A1–A2 = basic, B1–B2 = independent (most hiring bars sit here), C1–C2 = proficient. B2 roughly means “can hold a fluent work conversation without strain.”

Per-skill scores

Below the level, the interview as a whole is scored 1–10 across six skills:

  • Grammar & Vocabulary — accuracy and range.
  • Fluency & Coherence — flow and how well ideas connect.
  • Comprehension & Task completion — did they understand and actually answer.

Strengths, weaknesses & examples

The report lists concrete strengths and weaknesses, plus quoted examples from the transcript with suggestions — useful evidence to share with the hiring team.

Pronunciation

Below the CEFR report you'll find a pronunciation score (0–100) with a band: Good, Fair or Needs review. It breaks down into accuracy, fluency and prosody (rhythm and intonation). The score is measured against a US English reference: it shows how closely speech matches that reference, not whether the candidate is easy to understand.

Words to review lists the words that scored lowest against that reference. Press play next to a word to hear the answer where it came up.

Pronunciation never changes the CEFR level. The bands are provisional, so don't use them as a cut-off on their own. For roles where clarity on the phone matters, listen to the recording yourself. Paid plans analyze every interview automatically; on the Free plan, open an interview and click Analyze pronunciation to use your monthly analysis.

The recommendation

Finally, a short recommendation summarizes whether the candidate's spoken English fits a role at that level. Pair it with the recording — you can replay any answer to hear it yourself.

The CEFR level is an AI estimate generated from a transcript of what the candidate says. Accent is not a scoring criterion, but a transcription error can affect the result, so check the transcript and recording, especially for candidates near your bar. Treat it as a first screen, not the final word.
