Does FluencyScreen judge a candidate's accent?
Accent is not a scoring criterion for the CEFR level, which is scored from a transcript of what the candidate says (grammar, vocabulary, fluency, coherence, comprehension and task completion on the A1–C2 scale). Speech-to-text can mishear words, for example with some accents or poor audio, and a transcription error can affect the result, so the transcript and recording are there for you to check. Pronunciation is reported separately, as its own score measured against a US English reference, so accent can influence that score.
Do you assess pronunciation?
Yes, as a separate score next to the CEFR level. The pronunciation analysis shows an overall score, accuracy, fluency and prosody (rhythm and intonation), plus the words worth reviewing, each linked to the answer where it came up. It's measured against a US English reference, so it shows how closely speech matches that reference, not whether the candidate is easy to understand, and the bands are provisional. Paid plans include it on every interview; the Free plan includes one interview a month, which you choose from its report.
Do candidates need to create an account?
No. You send a one-time link; the candidate opens it in a browser, allows the microphone, and speaks. There's no signup or install on their side, and the link expires after 7 days.
How long does the interview take?
About 10 questions and usually 10–15 minutes. It's a relaxed, unscripted voice conversation with an AI interviewer — not a fixed quiz.
Can candidates cheat? Is it proctored?
It's a first screen, not a proctored exam. Follow-up questions are generated on the fly so there are no set answers to memorize, the full recording is saved for you to verify yourself, and signals like tab-switching are recorded with each session.
What is a CEFR level?
CEFR is the international standard for language ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). B1–B2 is 'independent' — most hiring bars sit here; B2 roughly means holding a fluent work conversation without strain.
How accurate is the score?
The level is an AI estimate. We haven't yet measured its accuracy or consistency in a formal study, such as a comparison with human raters or a retest of the same candidates, so we don't publish an accuracy figure. Interviews adapt to each candidate, and the confidence shown on each report is the AI's own estimate, not a measured accuracy rate. The full recording is saved so you can replay any answer and check the result yourself. Treat it as a first screen, not the final word.
